Labour councillors in Wirral have selected Paul Stuart as their group leader. This represents a clear threat to Wirral’s public services and its environment. Cllr Stuart has a record of supporting cuts and closures to public services and failing to protect our environment.
Cllr Stuart has voted in favour of:
- The closure of much-loved public services including leisure facilities in Woodchurch and Birkenhead and libraries across Wirral. This includes severe cuts in library provision in his own ward of Seacombe,
- The deeply unpopular Hoylake Golf Resort which would have wrecked large parts of Wirral’s precious green belt. Cllr Stuart also voted in favour of paying off the resort developer £495,000 of public money to extract Wirral from this disastrous scheme. Moreover, it is telling that Cllr Stuart’s statement to the press says absolutely nothing about tackling the climate emergency,
- Returning £1.3m in city-region funding for the Birkenhead Road public realm and walking/cycling scheme in his own ward of Seacombe displaying a complete failure to stand up for the health and welfare of the wider Wirral public.
It is now crystal clear that only the Green Party has a compelling offer for anyone in Wirral who believes in tackling the rampant levels of inequality in our borough and addressing the multiple threats to our environment.
The newly expanded group of 13 Green councillors in Wirral will be working harder than ever to protect our public services and provide practical solutions that will address inequality and improve our environment including:
- Investment in home insulation, renewables and energy efficiency,
- Support for public transport and active travel schemes to boost walking and cycling,
- Real Living Wage for all workers providing council services,
- Preserving our greenbelt and urban green spaces and zero carbon regeneration of brownfield land.
